Technology has in many ways made people become less active and has caused people to become lazier simply because they can. You can have food delivered to your door from the restaurant of your choice at the touch of a button. You can float around on a segway or electric bike. Since the dawn of online shopping people rarely have to go out clothes shopping. You can even have someone collect your grocery shopping for you.

This one is an oldie but goodie. A step counter is simply a device that counts your steps throughout the day, which is a great way to get a brief idea of whether or not you are active enough. More advanced ones may also tell you what times of day you are most active and give you maps of your walking/running throughout the day. Many phones now come with step counters as part of the basic software or if not there are apps for it.

Tracking your calories or at least having a rough idea of them can be hard when it comes to something like a chicken breast or potato as they don’t have packaging with nutritional information on. But there are now apps where you can take a picture of, or say what the food is and they will tell you it’s nutritional information including calories!

Meal Planner

A lot of people don’t have the time to meticulously plan meals and then buy all the right ingredients to ensure they are getting enough nutrients but not too many calories. There now exist apps to help with this. They will provide a week/month/year/etc. worth of meal plans. And for each of the nutritional information, ingredients you will need and in what quantities and recipes are included.

This takes the thought out of it for you and you simply have to follow the instructions. This can be great for people who don’t enjoy the process of deciding what to eat and how much to eat.

Exercise Watches

Exercise watches, or fitness trackers as they are often known these days have come a long way since basic step counters. They can have GPS tracking, heart rate monitors, sleep trackers. Many are waterproof to track your swimming activity, and some have contactless payments built-in making for quick transactions when you’re on the go. These are great for someone who wants round the clock monitoring of their fitness and activity!

Yoga and Workout Apps

That refreshing loose and light feeling one has after a good yoga session, or the euphoric pump one feels after a great workout session is something we all wish we had more of. But it can be quite hard to motivate yourself without a coach or guide. And for those people who don’t have a fitness background or know much about which exercises do what, it can be hard to know where to start. And this is where fitness apps can help. There are a variety of different apps designed for all ages and capabilities.

They talk you through the exercises with someone on the screen showing you how to do them and then giving you time to do them just as you would in a physical class. Many also track your progress so you develop your skills over time. Many people pick a gym close to home, or close to work. Making for easy excuses not to go. If you’re too tired after work or don’t get up early enough to go before, it not being close to you at all times makes it even harder to motivate yourself to go. That’s why there are apps now that allow you to use your gym pass in any gym!

So no more excuses. They do of course charge a fee for this but it’s far less than paying for two separate gyms would be and it’s extremely convenient. It allows you to go when you’re motivated and not waiting until you are near one to then find you don’t want to go anymore.
